Hotel Gromada in Toruń, in terms of the history of the building, is the oldest hotel facility in the OST Gromada hotel chain. Situated in the Old Town, in a historic medieval tenement house, it can boast a truly interesting history.
The tenement house was built in the second half of the 14th century - initially it served as a residential and storage facility. From 1437 to 1463 the tenement house belonged to Nicolaus Copernicus' grandfather, Łukasz Watzenrode, then its owner was the uncle of the famous astronomer, the Toruń mayor Tileman von Allen. In later years the building changed owners and was used primarily for the needs of Toruń merchants. An interesting period is the years 1866-1890, when the first Polish daily newspaper in Pomerania Nadwiślańskie was printed here - "Gazeta Toruńska". In 1900 the tenement housed a bar and restaurant "Pod Złotą Gwiazdą", and then "Pod Złotą Kotwicą". In 1972 the transformation of the building into a hotel and restaurant began. The works lasted six years, during which the tenement house at ul. Żeglarska 10 was connected to two neighboring buildings. The first guests crossed the thresholds of the new hotel in the OST Gromada chain in 1978. Over the centuries, the building has been rebuilt and renovated many times, but has retained its historic character.
